The inhabitants are called Lavais .

Laives is about 15 kilometers south of Chalon-sur-Saône . Laives is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Ambreuil in the north, Beaumont-sur-Grosne in the north-east, Sennecey-le-Grand in the east and south-east, Montceaux-Ragny in the south, Nanton in the south and south-west and Lalheue in the west.
