The BB 7200 is a French electric locomotive series for use on the direct current network of the SNCF with 1.5 kV. The locomotives were built by Alsthom between 1976 and 1985 and were the last pure DC locomotives to be delivered to the SNCF, all later developments are multi-system locomotives .

The locomotives have the typical front shape of the designer Paul Arzens for French locomotives of the 1960s and 1970s , which is called "Nez cassé" ("broken nose"). It was first implemented in the machines of the CC 40100 series and was also used in the sister locomotives of the BB 7200, the AC locomotives of the BB 15000 series and the two-system locomotives of the BB 22200 series . Starting with the locomotive with road number 7236, the windscreen was made less steep in favor of a more spacious driver's cab.

construction

Prototype BB 7003 in Hilversum (1976)

The BB 7200 were derived from the prototype machine BB 7003 and were the first direct current locomotives with automatic load control.

As multi-purpose locomotives, the BB 7200 are capable of moving both heavy freight trains and fast passenger trains. 68 machines of the series were delivered for the freight train service capable of double traction and with a low gear ratio, their top speed is 100 km / h. These are the BB 7343-7380 built in 1981/82 and the BB 7411-7440 built in 1984/85, the latter also being equipped with recuperation brakes and other technical innovations. The other vehicles were designed for passenger train service with a high gear ratio and approved for 160 km / h. In recent years three locomotives have been fitted with new bogies for individual BB 22200 for a top speed of 200 km / h. Other BB 7200 have had push-pull train control since April 2007 .

commitment

When the BB 7200 went into operation in 1976, it was initially assigned to the Villeneuve Saint-Georges depot . Since then, their area of use has steadily expanded, and so today the locomotives can be seen on practically the entire direct current network of the SNCF in front of express and regional trains as well as freight trains.

The pure freight locomotives of the first series were used between Villeneuve and Miramas via Limoges or Lyon . The locomotives of the second series were based in Chambéry for use in traffic to Italy via the Ligne de la Maurienne , where they pulled trains weighing up to 1600 t over the ramps . In 2004 all machines of the goods variant were brought together in Dijon . Since then, they have been running on the Gevrey – Sibelin – Miramas and Gevrey – Modane axes , but were also used in the pushing service on the Maurienne line. The increasing use of the BB 27000 series led to the first shutdowns in 2015; In autumn 2018, 30 machines of the freight version were still in use.

The locomotives for passenger trains are mainly used in passenger train traffic in the south-west of France, including the 200 km / h machines that mainly transport trains on the Paris – Toulouse route.

The BB 7200 with push-pull train control run in front of the double-decker trains between Paris and Laroche, where they have displaced the BB 9700 series from these services. From 2008 the new TER push-pull trains on the Paris-Dijon-Lyon axis will also be hauled by BB 7200.

With the breakdown of SNCF into different business areas, the BB 7200 portfolio was split up on January 1, 1999:

  • Long-distance traffic: VFE (code number 1)
  • Supraregional passenger transport: CIC (code number 2)
  • Freight transport: Fret (code number 4)
  • Regional traffic: TER (code number 5).

The code numbers are placed in front of the locomotive numbers.

BB 7600 in the "Transilien" paint scheme

Since 2012, 14 locomotives have been in service on line N of the Transilien network in front of double-decker cars of the type VB 2N . For this purpose they are now referred to as the BB 7600. They have been upgraded for passenger traffic (1.5 kV heating cable, push-pull train control ) and have been given a new paint job in the Transilien design.

Coloring

BB 7360 in gray livery "Fantôme"

On delivery, all locomotives of the BB 7200 series were painted in the then current “Béton” color scheme (gray with an orange decorative line). In 1996, the "Béton" color scheme was replaced by the "Corail +" livery. From the year 2000 the locomotives were repainted according to their affiliation to the various business areas of the SNCF. Initially, the machines for freight transport were given the livery “Fret”, and in 2003 those for long-distance passenger transport were given the livery “En Voyage”. In 2011, the machines in the infrastructure area were given a yellow locomotive body , two years later “En Voyage” gradually had to give way to the gray “Fantôme” paintwork. The blue “ Transilien ” paint scheme was given to the locomotives running in Île-de-France ; the BB 7321 used at TER Bourgogne remained a unique piece with its red front.

The following machines were repainted as of May 2013:

  • Multiservice (Corail +): BB 7258, 7292
  • Fret: BB 7212, 7400, 7411
  • En Voyage: BB 7201, 7202, 7205, 7206, 7211, 7215, 7217, 7218, 7229, 7230, 7236–7249, 7284, 7286, 7290, 7291, 7319, 7320, 7322, 7323, 7340, 7391, 7402, 7409, 7410
