Railway Paris – Marseille to Marseille-St-Charles

The Nevers – Chagny railway is a 161 km long, double-track , non-electrified railway line in France . It creates an important cross-connection between the two north-south highways Paris – Clermont-Ferrand (via Montargis ) and Paris – Marseille . Both freight and passenger traffic take place on it.

history

The approval for the construction and operation of the line falls in the time immediately after the takeover of the property and the material assets after the dissolution of the Grand-Central on March 24, 1857, which it had applied for along with other lines, to the Chemin de fer de Paris à Orléans (PO). The contract with the Ministry of Public Works and Transport was signed on April 11, 1857.

The construction was carried out from its two endpoints. The opening of the line between Montchanin and Chagny took place on September 22, 1861, between Nevers and Cercy-la-Tour on June 11, 1866 and between Chercy-la-Tour and Montchanin on September 16, 1867. The construction cost was FF 28 million .

Studies see this railway line as part of a Central European Atlantic Railway (VFCEA). This would require electrification and the introduction of GSM-R , which would mean upgrading the route. Independently of this, the Franche-Comté region and SNCF Réseau invested EUR 11.5 million in maintaining this route in 2020 over 20 km.
