Railway line Nevers – Chagny to Chagny

The Étang – Santenay railway line (also Chemin de fer de l'Autunois ) is a former, single-track railway line in France . It was put into operation between 1867 and 1870 and closed in two stages in 1979 and 2011. In 1989, 36 km out of 59 km were de- drafted . A special feature of this route is the connection to the same trunk route at both its start and end point. While the trunk line in the Étang-sur-Arroux separation station describes an arc to the south-east and then back to the north-east, Étang – Santenay leads clearly to the north-east from Étang and then back to the south-east. The mean area created by these stretches roughly corresponds to a square on the top .

history

Map with planned route 1860.
Branch at Dracy: left the route to Cravant , straight on towards Santenay is still used.

Even before the main line through the Chemin de fer de Paris à Orléans (PO) went into operation, she applied to the Ministry of Agriculture, Trade and Public Works for the construction and operation of this line. Approval took place on June 11, 1863. On January 23, 1864, their public interest, including the permit for passenger traffic, was granted. The costs were estimated at 5 million FF . The reason for the construction was to supply a mining area around Autun and Epinac.

Construction proceeded quickly, even though larger engineering structures had to be built with a tunnel over 1200 meters long and two 158 and 195 long viaducts. The opening of the first section between Étang-sur-Arroux and Autun took place on September 16, 1867, the second from Autun to Epinac a good year later on October 26, 1868 and the gap to the main line from Epinac to Santenay on June 13, 1870 .

The section from Dracy-St.-Loup to Santenay was interrupted for passenger traffic on September 29, 1979 because the LGV high-speed route Combs-la-Ville-Saint-Louis was to be built. The line still served to supply the construction site and was shut down on November 10, 1981 after the work was completed. Since the LGV line was built at the same level, the former line of the Étang – Santenay line was finally destroyed. A decree on decommissioning was published on September 24, 1989.

In 2008 a footpath was opened between Santenay and Nolay on the former route, which is also open to cyclists and which was extended in 2011 to the Changey tunnel on the D 973. Between 2014 and 2019, the route in the Epinac – Dracy-Saint-Loup section was also converted accordingly. In order to connect both sections, the Changey tunnel would have to be opened, but the owner obviously charges a very high price for the sale. Talks are being held with the SNCF to redesign the route between Autun and Dracy, which has not been used since December . The aim would be to create the entire former railway line as a combined foot / bike path.

In the 13 months between November 2016 and December 2017, the almost 15 km long route between Étang-sur-Arroux and Autun was completely closed in order to carry out modernization work. Fears of the population that this could mean the final out of hand, did not come true.
