The Culmont-Chalindrey-Gray railway is a former railway line in the French departments of Haute-Marne and Haute-Saône . It was licensed in the summer of 1852 and initially only for passenger traffic in 1970, and in 1991 after a derailment to other traffic as well. It was single-track and never electrified. The kilometrage is from Paris-Est train station .

The first concession for this planned route was given to the concessionaires Eugène and Alfred de Vandeul, Jean-Marie de Grimaldi, Josiah Wilkinson, Georges Burge, Georges Hennet and James Rhodes, who by a notarial deed dated May 29 and June 1, 1852 the Chemin de fer "Compagnie de chemin de fer de Blesmes à Saint-Dizier et à Gray" (Society of the railways from Blesmes and Saint-Dizier to Gray). The latter four gentlemen were all from the London area . This establishment was approved by decree on June 4, 1852. It was thus the extension of the Blesme-Haussignémont – Chaumont and Chaumont – Chalindrey railway on the Paris – Mulhouse railway , which, in contrast to this southern end, were both double-tracked.

The concession contract obliged the concessionaires to complete the line within five years and at the same time included a subsidy of 10 million francs, which was to be paid in ten installments, the last only after the line was fully operational.

Just one year later, on July 23, 1853, the concession was sold to the Chemin de fer de l'Est , which built the line and opened it on July 22, 1858, after the Langres – Belfort section only three months earlier, and with it the gap in the Paris – Mulhouse railway line was filled. It remained in operation until it was taken over by the SNCF state railway on January 1, 1938.

Route description

This railway line is a north-south connection that tied on existing lines, in the north the Paris – Mulhouse line and in the south the Saint-Julien – Gray line , which continues from Gray as the Vaivre – Gray line Vesoul led and connected there again to the Paris – Mulhouse highway .

The line left the Chaumont-Chalindrey station in the direction of Gray in a southerly direction, led in a wide arc past the depot of the station and crossed the Is-sur-Tille – Culmont-Chalindrey railway with a bridge structure. About 1.2 km later - at today's end of the route - she crossed the still very young course of the Douay, which she followed to the end on her orohydrographically right side to the end of the route, but no longer bridged it. With a few exceptions, the terrain led steadily downwards over the almost 45 km, but with a very slight gradient of max. 6 per mille. So no noteworthy engineering structures were required for the construction of the route.
