The Jussey – Darnieulles-Uxegney railway was a temporarily double-track , non-electrified railway line in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté ( Haute-Saône department ) and Grand Est ( Vosges department ) regions in France . It was part of the Strategic Railways network and supplied the Vôge region , which at the time of the railway construction was living economically from the sandstone and glassmaking industries. The strategic importance can be recognized by their double track and by the overpass structure at Jussey, which allowed cross-traffic from the main line. In Jussey there was a transition to the 470-kilometer narrow-gauge network of the CFV ( Chemins de fer vicinaux de Haute-Saône ). A continuation of the route to Gray was planned by a decision of June 11, 1883, but was not implemented.
The line was closed for over 50 years between 1954 and 1994.
history
The building permit for the line, issued in mid-1879, was intended to consolidate the region's railway network, in particular to serve the industrial sites of Monthureux-sur-Saône and Darney and to secure the border region with Prussia . The construction was under the so-called Freycinet plan developed by Charles de Freycinet , with which better access for all French to the railway infrastructure was established. The Canal des Vosges , which was approved for ships of the Péniche class and was roughly the same length on this section, was built parallel to and at the same time as this traffic route . From the beginning until its nationalization at the end of 1937, the line was under the management of the private transport company Chemin de fer de l'Est .
The line was put into operation on November 21, 1886. It was of particular importance at the beginning of the First World War in the deployment area of the French troops from August to November 1914 and then again in June 1940 at the beginning of the Second World War . With the exception of one passenger train, the traffic was stopped by the German occupation until mid-June 1941 and dismantled on a track. With the withdrawal of the German troops on May 5, 1944, no more passenger trains ran on the route.
As early as the 1954/55 winter timetable, the first section Passavant - Monthureux-sur-Saône , almost nine kilometers long, was also discontinued for freight traffic. In mid-February 1964, the Passavant-la-Rochère Port on the Canal des Vosges and the connecting curve coming from Jussey on the Paris – Mulhouse railway followed . In February 1978, the longest, 38-kilometer section, Monthureux-sur-Saône-Darnieulles-Uxegney, was closed. The section Jussey –Passavant was the final point of the declassification on October 17, 1994.
