Tatal Bridge
Pont Tatal or Viaduc de l'Ourche is a former railway bridge on the double- track Jussey – Darnieulles-Uxegney railway in the Vosges department . It was put into operation in 1882 primarily from a military point of view and shut down together with the railway line in 1973. It has been used by bungee jumpers and rock climbers since 1998 .
location
The circular arch bridge crosses the 13 km long ore , which flows in a westerly direction and flows into the Saône about 500 meters later , with a slightly convex course in the direction of the river . The railway line and the river lie in an area with dense deciduous forest .
Building description
The 121 meter long bridge is 43 meters high and made of solid sandstone blocks. It consists of eight arches that become smaller on both sides of the valley and taper towards the top to a cornice , above which the actual, circular arches begin. These arches are made with historicizing, contemporary tastes , with corner racks . On top of the wall can be found in the middle of the eight columns small kragende outward by massive consoles held balconies that support the structure of the building, but otherwise have no function.
In terms of construction, it corresponds to the lower and, at 83 meters, slightly shorter Viaduc de Belrupt , which is a good eight kilometers further northeast along the same route.
history
The railway line was designed and financed as part of the Strategic Railways . Even after 1945 the line was considered unprofitable, was no longer used for its actual strategic purpose and was shut down in 1973. The tracks and superstructure were removed.
