Oberbergeramt
The Oberbergeramt or Gossauer Amt was an administrative district in the Oberamt der Alte Landschaft of the St. Gallen monastery state from 1491 to 1798 .
The Oberbergeramt comprised the lower courts of Gossau , Oberdorf, Andwil , Niederwil- Gebhardschwil, Ober arnegg- Neuandwil, Waldkirch and in Thurgau Sitterdorf . The Sitterdorfer were evidently rebellious subjects towards the abbot, who made interventions by the confederates necessary several times . In contrast to the people in the princes' country , they were allowed to practice their religion freely.
The residence of the abbot's upper bailiffs was Oberberg Castle near Gossau, built in the first half of the 13th century, from 1491 to 1790 , then until 1798 the later Gasthaus Ochsen in Gossau.
The Vogt of the Oberbergeramt supervised the communities, checked the church accounts, held community meetings and was the investigative authority and chairman of the court. He was responsible for executing fines and fines and enforced moral mandates from the 17th century.
