Fontaines is a French municipality with 475 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Yonne in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté (2015: Burgundy ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Auxerre and the canton of Cœur de Puisaye (until 2015: canton of Toucy ). The residents call themselves Fontanais .

Fontaines is located in the Puisaye countryside , about 20 kilometers west-southwest of Auxerre . Fontaines is surrounded by the neighboring communities Dracy in the north, Toucy in the north and northeast, Moulins-sur-Quanne and Lalande in the east, Fontenoy in the southeast, Saints-en-Puisaye in the south, Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye in the south and southwest as well Mézilles in the west.
