The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Auxerre and the canton of Cœur de Puisaye (until 2015: canton of Toucy ). The residents call themselves Égléniens .

Égleny is located in the Puisaye countryside , about 18 kilometers west-northwest of Auxerre . Égleny is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Maurice-le-Veil in the north, Poilly-sur-Tholon in the northeast, Lindry in the east, Beauvoir in the south, Merry-la-Vallée in the west and southwest and Le Val d'Ocre in the west and Northwest.
