The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Auxerre (until 2017 Avallon ) and the canton of Chablis (until 2015 Noyers ).

Nitry is about 30 kilometers southeast of Auxerre . Nitry is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Lichères-près-Aigremont in the north and northwest, Aigremont in the north and northeast, Noyers in the east, Grimault in the southeast, Joux-la-Ville in the south and Vermenton in the west. The A6 autoroute runs through the municipality .
