Rāmsar ( Persian رامسر, DMG Rāmsar ) is a city in the province of Māzandarān , northern Iran , on the Caspian Sea and the Elburs Mountains with over 33,000 inhabitants (as of 2012).

The airport in Rāmsar is one of the lowest located airports in the world (21 meters below sea level), which until recently was only served by the Āsemān airline . Besides Persian , the "national language", Gilaki is widespread in Rāmsar .

history

On February 2, 1971, the Rāmsar Convention named after her , one of the oldest international treaties on environmental protection , was adopted in the city .

geology

One of the world's highest levels of natural radiation is measured in an area in Rāmsar that is home to around 2,000 people . The high levels of radiation are caused by hot springs that bring radium from underground rocks to the surface. The average annual dose equivalent is about 6 mSv. Up to 132 mSv were measured in a house on a wall in a bedroom, with a highest calculated value of 260 mSv. This high theoretical value is often given as the only value for Rāmsar. For comparison, occupationally exposed persons are allowed to absorb a maximum of 20 mSv per year in Europe and a maximum of 50 mSv in the USA. A firefighter in Austria may receive a "disaster dose" of 250 mSv at most once in a lifetime.
