Galgentobel
The Galgentobel is a narrow valley in the east of the city of St. Gallen . The Steinach flows through it, which leaves its underground canal at Espenmoos and flows open again from here. The valley makes up the upper part of the Steinachtobel (the two names are also used synonymously), but the name Galgentobel is the older one.
The steepest section of the St. Gallen – Rorschach railway line runs along the valley flank. The difficult topographical conditions with sloping slopes have already led to operational interruptions several times. Apart from a field path from Mörschwil , which was extended as a hiking trail to the Heiligkreuz district in 2012 , no road leads into the valley.
The valley takes its name from the abbot high court gallows , which was once on the site of today's Evangelical Church of the Holy Cross, at the western end of the valley.
