Carlos Urrutigoity (* in the 20th century in Mendoza , Argentina ) is a Catholic priest and was a member of the Society of St. Pius X until 1999 . He was suspended in the USA in 2005 for sexual abuse and settled in Paraguay, where he was Vicar General of the Diocese of Ciudad del Este from 2012-2014 .

Life

In Argentina

Urrutigoity was ordained a priest in the late 1980s, valid but canonically illegal, by Richard Williamson , one of the excommunicated bishops of the schismatic Society of St. Pius X. (Pius Brotherhood), in the brotherhood's seminary in La Reja , a town in the Argentine province of Buenos Aires . By receiving the ordination without permission, he incurred the church penalty of suspension latae sententiae .

In the United States

Transfer

In 1998, he was Williamson in the seminar of the SSPX in Winona (Minnesota) in the United States added after allegations of sexual abuse had become loud. This was done on the condition that Urrutigoity be monitored. The Argentine bishop Andrés Morello stated that he had requested the transfer because of Urrutigoity's “incorrect behavior”.

Change of community

In Winona, Urrutigoity was excluded from the Pius Brotherhood in 1999 because of "subversive behavior" and was incardinated by the then local bishop James Clifford Timlin in the Diocese of Scranton in Pennsylvania . There he joined the St. Gregory Academy.

Criminal proceedings

In 2002 he was charged with child sexual abuse in the Scranton District Court . A teenage student - known to the public by the code name John Doe - accused him of providing alcoholic beverages and sleeping with minors . Along with Priest Eric Ensey , he was also charged with assaults, physical attacks and deliberate mental intimidation. Doe accused Ensey of Urrutigoity of forcing him to have sex ; Urrutigoity then told him that the guest house was given to important guests and that they had to sleep together in one bed. A few days later, Urrutigoity also sexually abused Doe. He also touched Doe's genitals while he was sleeping and put him under pressure to insert a suppository in front of Urrutigoity , which Doe refused to do.

Both priests denied the accused. The court refrained from convicting Urrutigoity and Ensey in 2005 because the Scranton diocese paid $ 450,000 in compensation to Doe's family in return for dropping the case . Before the newspaper Global Post claimed Urrutigoity victims to have been a decade-long smear campaign. The priest, who had meanwhile risen to prelate , was suspended by Bishop Joseph Francis Martino and sent to Canada , where he was supposed to undergo a psychological examination at the Southdown Institute .

Urrutigoity fled to Paraguay after paying personal compensation of US $ 300,000 to the victim.

In Paraguay

The Diocese of Scranton, as well as the Apostolic Nuncios of Paraguay and the United States and several professors who had trained Urrutigoity, advised the Diocese of Ciudad del Este against admitting him as prelate . There were grave concerns about him and he was a serious danger to young people.

Priest, junior vicar, vicar general

Despite the warnings issued by the church, he was incardinated by Bishop Rogelio Livieres Plano , a member of Opus Dei , in the diocese of Ciudad del Este in the country's triangle with Argentina and Brazil . Although Livieres Plano was informed by the Diocese of Scranton about Urrutigoity's "wild prehistory", he appointed him youth vicar of his diocese and entrusted him with the preparation of a course on Catholic culture for young people . Livieres also made Plano Urrutigoity rector of the diocesan seminary. Urrutigoity held the position of youth vicar until 2014. The youth prosecutor María Graciela Vera could not find any initial suspicion of sexual crimes Urrutigoitys within Paraguay. In 2012, Bishop Livieres appointed Plano Urrutigoity as his vicar general.

Visitation and removal

Two years later, the Archbishop of Asunción , Eustaquio Pastor Cuquejo Verga CSsR , to whose ecclesiastical province Ciudad del Este belongs, requested a canonical investigation by the diocese. Cuquejo explicitly named Urrutigoity's activity in the diocese as the reason for the demand. Bishop Livieres then accused the Archbishop of homosexuality and defended Urrutigoity against allegations of abuse from Pennsylvania.

A few days before the beginning of an apostolic visitation ordered by Pope Francis , Urrutigoity was deposed as Vicar General by Bishop Livieres Plano on July 14, 2014, as Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi SJ announced on July 30, 2014. The bishop continued to defend Urrutigoity - regardless of the compensation payments to his victim on file - against the allegations of abuse. After the end of the 21-26 Visitation carried out by Cardinal Curia Santos Abril y Castelló in July 2014 , Livieres Plano was deposed as local bishop by Pope Francis on September 25, 2014.

In June 2015 Urrutigoity left a parish in Ciudad del Este , where he had been a priest until then, and left for Argentina. Since then he has lived in the diocese of San Rafael in the Institute of the Incarnate Word .
