Joseph Francis Martino

Joseph Francis Martino (born May 1, 1946 in Philadelphia ) is former Bishop of Scranton .

Life

The rector of the Pontifical North America College , James Aloysius Hickey , ordained him on December 18, 1970 as a priest of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia .

Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in Philadelphia and titular bishop of Cellae in Mauretania on January 24, 1996 . The Archbishop of Philadelphia, Anthony Joseph Cardinal Bevilacqua , donated him episcopal ordination on March 11 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Francis Schulte , Archbishop of New Orleans , and Edward Peter Cullen , Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia.

He was named Bishop of Scranton on July 25, 2003, and inducted into office on October 1 of the same year. During his term of office, the Diocese of Scranton paid compensation of US $ 450,000 to a sexually abused youth, whereby the prelate, Carlos Urrutigoity , who was installed in the diocese, escaped a criminal sentence. Martino resigned from his position on August 31, 2009.
