The Bald Mountain is a mountain in the south of the State of Idaho near the town of Ketchum ( Blaine Country ). Bald Mountain is the central mountain of the Sun Valley ski area. The mountain range is known for the long descents with demanding slopes and many different levels of difficulty. The mountain in Sawtooth National Forest is one of the tallest in Idaho's Smoky Mountains.

General

The north-east flank of the mountain rises 1036 m above the adjoining valley. The mountain is accessible with 14 ski lifts, there are 75 ski slopes and a total of 8.31 km² of slopes, 2.64 km² of which are mainly artificially snowed. 36% of the slopes are easy, 42% medium and 22% difficult. In front of Bald Mountain is Dollar Mountain, which is also served by ski lifts. There are only easy slopes on this mountain.

Bald Mountain is independent of Bald Mountain Ski Area (a smaller ski mountain near Pierce ( Clearwater Country )).

history

In the 1940s, Bald Mountain was initially opened to skiing with three lifts. The lifts reached up to a height of 2749 m just below the summit.

In a series by NBC "10.5 Apocalypse" it was assumed that Bald Mountain was an extinct volcano until it would erupt. The ashes of the erupting volcano would bury the entire ski area and the neighboring towns and villages.
