Marquess of Downshire
Marquess of Downshire is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland .
The family seat was Easthampstead Park in Berkshire and is now Clifton Castle near Hambleton in North Yorkshire . The respective Marquess is also the hereditary Constables of Hillsborough Fort .
Award and subordinate titles
The title was created on August 20, 1789 for Wills Hill, 1st Earl of Hillsborough .
As early as October 3, 1751 he was raised in the Peerage of Ireland to Earl of Hillsborough and Viscount Kilwarlin in the County of Down ; Both titles were awarded with the special addition that, in the absence of male descendants of his own, the title could also be passed on to his uncle Arthur Hill, 1st Viscount Dungannon and his male descendants. In addition, he was in the Peerage of Great Britain on November 17, 1756 the title of Baron Harwich , of Harwich in the County of Essex , and on August 28, 1772 the titles of Earl of Hillsborough and Viscount Fairford in the County of Gloucester were awarded. In addition, in 1742 he had inherited the title Viscount Hillsborough and Baron Hill of Kilwarlin , both in the Peerage of Ireland, given to his father on August 21, 1717 . The 9th Marquess also inherited the title 8th Baron Sandys , of Ombersley in the County of Worcester, created June 19, 1802 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom in 2013 from a great-grand-uncle of the second degree . The titles mentioned have since been listed as subordinate titles to the Marquess of Downshire.
