Awards
For the first time on April 27, 1523 the title Baron Sandys , of The Vyne, was created in the Peerage of England for Sir William Sandys , the favorite of King Henry VIII . The title fell on the death of the 8th Baron in Abeyance around 1683 and has not been restored since.
On December 20, 1743, the title Baron Sandys , of Ombersley in the County of Worcester in the Peerage of Great Britain was re-created in favor of the outgoing Chancellor of the Exchequer Samuel Sandys . The title expired when his son the 2nd Baron died on March 11, 1797.
On June 19, 1802, the title Baron Sandys , of Ombersley in the County of Worcester, was finally created in the Peerage of the United Kingdom for Mary Hill, Marchioness of Downshire , widow of Arthur Hill, 2nd Marquess of Downshire . She was a niece of the last Baron's second bestowal. The title was bestowed with the special note that it was primarily inheritable to her younger sons Arthur Moyses, Marcus, Augustus and George and their male descendants and only then to her eldest son, Arthur Blundell Hill, 3rd Marquess of Downshire , and his male offspring. The latter regulation took effect on the death of the 7th Baron on February 11, 2013, when Nicholas Hill, 9th Marquess of Downshire , a descendant of the 3rd Marquess, inherited the title of 8th Baron Sandys. The barony has since been a minor title of the Marquess of Downshire .
