John Herbert (athlete)

John Alan Adolphus Herbert (born April 20, 1962 in Nottingham ) is a former British triple jumper who was active as a bobsleigh driver after his athletics career .

In 1982 he was twelfth at the European Athletics Championships in Athens . At the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane he was starting fourth in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump for England .

The following year he won bronze at the Universiade in Edmonton and was eliminated from the qualification at the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 1983 . In 1984 he was sixth at the European Indoor Championships in Gothenburg and tenth at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles . At the Universiade in 1985 in Kobe, he won bronze again.

In 1986 he celebrated his greatest international success with a victory at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh . A fifth place at the European Indoor Championships in Budapest in 1988 was followed by a qualifying round at the Olympic Games in Seoul .

In 1989 he was eighth at the World Indoor Championships in Budapest , in 1990 fourth at the Commonwealth Games in Auckland , eighth at the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow and ninth at the European Championships in Split . At the 1991 World Cup in Tokyo, he did not get past the first round.

In 1988 and 1990 he was English outdoor champion, in 1995 indoor. In 1982 he was British champion in the long jump, in 1986 in the triple jump.

In 1993 he switched to bobsleigh. His greatest success in this discipline is eighth place in the four-man bobsleigh at the 1994 Olympic Games in Lillehammer.

As a trainer he looked after the triple jumper Phillips Idowu and the long jumper Jade Johnson .
