George Van Cleaf ( George W. Van Cleaf ; born October 1879 in New York City , † January 6, 1905 ibid) was an American swimmer and athlete .
Van Cleaf competed with the 4 × 50 m relay in swimming and reached fourth place. Together with his teammates from the New York Athletic Club David Bratton , Leo Goodwin , Louis Handley , David Hesser , Joseph Ruddy and James Steen , he competed in the water polo tournament , in which they beat the US team from the Chicago Athletic Club 6-0 . Then George Van Cleaf also competed in the long and triple jump competitions, in which he reached fifth place.
The water polo games took place in a heavily polluted lake, which is why van Cleaf fell ill with typhus a few months after his victory and died a little later.
