JR Curtis

James R. Curtis, Jr. (born August 18, 1945 in Longview , Texas , † September 2, 2000 in Durango , Colorado ) was an American radio entrepreneur and local politician.

Life

JR Curtis graduated from Longview High School and graduated from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth in 1967 . He then attended the American Institute of Foreign Trade in Glendale, Arizona . Back in Texas, JR worked for KFRO , his father's radio station. In 1986, JR Curtis took over the station from his father and was its managing director and owner until 1998. Over the years he also acquired other regional broadcasters. Curtis was also active in the Texas Association of Broadcasters , in 1993 he held the post of chairman. At the national level, Curtis held a senior position in the National Association of Broadcasters in Washington, DC from 1996 to 1999 .

JR Curtis came into contact with politics in his hometown of Longview as a teenager when he reported on the meetings of the city council for his father. From 1975 to 1984 he was a member of the city council, in 1977/78 he was allowed to hold the office of mayor for one year . At the time, at 33, he was the youngest mayor in Texas.

On September 2, 2000, JR Curtis was killed in a motorcycle accident in Colorado. In his memory, the JR Curtis Jr. Memorial Garden , specially designed for blind people, was built in Longview in 2002 .
