Oluwakemi "Kemi" Adekoya (born January 16, 1993 in Lagos ) is a Bahraini hurdler and sprinter of Nigerian origin who has been eligible to compete in Bahrain since 2014.

Athletic career

Kemi Adekoya gained her first international experience at the 2014 Athletics Continental Cup in Marrakech , where she finished third in the 400-meter hurdles run in 54.70 seconds. Then she managed a double victory over 400 meters and 400 meters hurdles at the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea . In 2015 she won the gold medal over 400 meters at the Arab Championships in Manama in 54.06 seconds and came second over the hurdles behind the Moroccan Lamiae Lhabze . She then took part in the Asian Championships in Wuhan , where she won the hurdles in a championship record time of 54.31 s. So she qualified for the World Championships in Beijing , where she was disqualified in advance . At the end of October she won the hurdles at the Military World Games in Mungyeon and was third in the season. In 2016 she took part in the Asian Indoor Championships in Doha , where she won with a championship and Asian record of 51.67 seconds, clearly ahead of Elina Michina from Kazakhstan, and also won the Bahraini 4 x 400 meter relay with a new Asi record of 3:35, 07 min the gold medal ahead of Iran and Jordan. She then took part in the Asian Indoor Championships in Portland , where she increased her Asian record to 51.45 s, winning ahead of the American Ashley Spencer . Over 400 meters she qualified during the outdoor season for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where she was eliminated in the semifinals with 50.88 seconds .

In 2017 she won the Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku in the hurdles and with the relay and was second in the 400-meter run in 51.81 s behind her compatriot Salwa Eid Naser . The following year she took part again in the Asian Games in Jakarta and won the gold medal there with a new player record of 54.48 s in front of the Vietnamese Quách Thị Lan . She also secured the gold medal in the mixed 4 x 400 meter relay ahead of India and Kazakhstan. In January 2019, Adekoya was proven to have used the banned steroid stanozolol and was subsequently banned . In addition, their gold medals at the Asian Games from the previous year were revoked.

Adekoya graduated from the University of Lagos with a degree in accounting .

Conflict with the Nigerian Athletics Federation

After their change of nation in spring 2014, there was a conflict with the President of the Nigerian Athletics Federation (AFN), Solomon Ogba , who did not seem to have been informed about this process and then lodged a complaint with the International Federation . Since Adekoya was never a member of the AFN, the association could not veto the transfer.
