Ruqaya Al Ghasra ( Arabic رقية الغسرة Ruqaya al-Ghasara , DMG Ruqaya al-Ġasara , also written Rakia Al-Gassra ; * September 6, 1982 , Bani Jamra ) is a former Bahraini sprinter .

The athlete caused a particular sensation by wearing a long-sleeved shirt, long trousers and a tightly fitting hijab (headgear) in sports competitions with which she covered the so-called aura of her body in accordance with Islamic regulations so that only hands and face remained free.

Life

Al Ghasra began her athletic career as a basketball player on her school team, but because of her speed she came to athletics at the age of 19. After winning a few school championships, she brought a teacher to the national Bahrain Athletics Association in 2000 , which shortly thereafter started a program to support female youth athletes. Until then, women in this Gulf state could only participate in team sports, as the athletics clubs were not accessible to them. In the same year Al Ghasra reached a sixth place at the Arab Youth Championships in Damascus.

At the 13th Pan-Arab Athletics Championships in Amman (Jordan), Al Ghasra won gold over 100 meters (11.61 s) and in the 200-meter run (24.09 s) in 2003 . At the Asian Indoor Championships, which were held for the first time in 2004 in Tehran, she won silver medals in the 60 meters (7.48 s), 200 meters (24.18 s) and 400 meters (55.29 s). At the World Indoor Championships in Budapest in 2004 , she was eliminated over 400 meters in advance, although she set a Bahraini record with 54.24 s.

Al Ghasra filled with 11.39 s the first woman from an Arab country, the Olympic 100-meter qualifying standard (qualification limit 11.40 seconds) was so not like some other participants from Islamic states to a wild card of the IOC instructed. With 11.49 s she was eliminated from the Olympic Games in Athens in the run-up, where she missed advancement by six hundredths of a second.

In 2005, at the third West Asian Games in Doha, 12.28 s were enough to win the 100-meter run, which was held for the first time for women. At the age of 24, she won the gold medal in the 200-meter run at the Asian Games in Qatar in 2006 with 23.19 seconds, ahead of the Uzbek Goʻzal Xubbiyeva and the Sri Lankan Susanthika Jayasinghe , the Al Ghasra in the 100-meter run, where she followed a false start scored 11.40 s, to the bronze rank. These Asian Games were the first in which Bahraini athletes won a medal. However, while the naturalized middle-distance runner Maryam Yusuf Jamal from Ethiopia wore the clothes typical of her sport, Al Ghasra, like some athletes from other nations, was dressed in accordance with the cultural tradition of her home country. Al Ghasra said in an interview after her victory that wearing clothes according to traditional regulations inspires her and is not a disability.

Due to a torn muscle fiber that Al Ghasra suffered in her left thigh in July 2007, she was unable to contest the World Championships in Osaka in August and the Asian Indoor Games in Macau in October. At the second Asian Indoor Championships in Doha in February 2008, the recovered Al Ghasra won gold medals in the 60 m (7.40 s) and 400 m (53.28 s).

At the 2008 Olympics

Although she was also qualified over 100 meters, she announced ahead of the Beijing Olympics that she would limit herself to the 200-meter run, in which she was aiming for a medal. Both in the preliminary as well as in the quarterfinals she was first with 22.81 s and 22.76 s, but in the semi-finals she was eliminated in sixth with 22.72 s.

At the opening ceremony, women moved in to carry flags for the Gulf States for the first time, apart from Al Ghasra, the Iranian Homa Hosseini and Sheikha Maitha Almaktoum from the United Arab Emirates .

Al Ghasra wore a hijood on his head in Beijing , designed by the Australian fashion designer Aheda Zanetti , who later became known for her Islamic swimsuit Burkini , which she had designed for her textile company Ahiida . The hijood is a hood-shaped hijab (the word is made up of the English words for veil, hijab, and hood, hood ) that covers the hair and neck. She previously wore clothing from the sporting goods manufacturer Nike . With her demeanor, the pious Shiite wanted to encourage her fellow believers to practice competitive sports, because women's sports are new in Bahrain and other Gulf states . The President of the Bahrain Athletics Association (BAA) described her as a "role model, especially for young girls". The start of Muslim women in clothing according to traditional Islamic customs at the Olympic Games is on the one hand seen as a step towards equality in Islamic countries, but on the other hand it is also perceived as a sign of re- Islamization .

At the 2009 World Championships in Berlin , Al Ghasra reached the semi-finals over 200 meters and the quarter-finals over 100 meters. At the end of the year, she resigned for health reasons. In July 2010, however , the World Athletics Federation ( IAAF) announced that an epitestosterone violation was found in her during a training check a week before the 2009 World Championships and she was given a two-year doping ban . The Berlin results were deleted.

Her personal bests are 11.12 s for 100 meters (Milan, July 2, 2008, Arab record) and 22.65 s for 200 meters (Rome, July 11, 2008, Arab record). Al Ghasra is 1.70 m tall and weighed 65 kg at competition times. She studied sports management.
