Jemima Jelagat Sumgong (born December 21, 1984 ) is a Kenyan marathon runner and Olympic champion.

Career

In 2004 she won the North Sea Beach Marathon half marathon .

In 2006 she was second in the Newport 10,000 and the Peachtree Road Race, third in the Boilermaker 15K and won the Las Vegas Marathon . The following year she was third in the Azalea Trail Run and fourth in the Frankfurt Marathon . In 2008 a second place followed in the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon . In 2010 she finished fifth in the Berlin Marathon and the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon.

After a baby break, she won the 2011 Castellón Marathon .

2012 doping ban

In 2012 she set a course record in the Lake Maggiore half marathon and came second in the Boston marathon . There her doping test was positive for the cortisone preparation prednisolone . Her two-year ban was lifted because the injection was medically indicated.

On April 24, 2016, she won the London Marathon with 2:22:58 h.

Olympic Games 2016

On August 14, 2016, Sumgong won the marathon of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro with a time of 2:24:04 h. She is the first Kenyan woman to win the women's marathon at the Olympic Games.

Doping ban 2017

In April 2017, it was announced that Sumgong had tested positive for Epo in a doping test . She was then banned for four years. However, she was allowed to keep her marathon gold from the 2016 Olympic Games. The doping ban was doubled to eight years at the end of January 2019 because she presented fake hospital certificates when trying to relieve herself. She is not allowed to participate in any competitions until 2025.

Private

Jemima Jelagat Sumgong is married to her runner colleague Noah Talam and has a daughter. She has been employed by the Kenyan Armed Forces since 2009 and is trained in Kapsabet by the Italian Claudio Beradelli.
