North Sea Beach Marathon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The North Sea Beach Marathon is a marathon in the Danish West Jutland that has been held at the beginning of July since 2000. It is one of the few running events in the world that is exclusively run on sand. In addition to the classic 42.195 km route, there is a half marathon and runs of 5 and 10 km.

The route is a point-to-point course on the beach between Hvide Sande and Vejers Strand , running north in even years and south in odd years. The half marathon always starts in Nymindegab and has the same goal as the marathon. The shorter runs are turning point routes that start and end at the destination of the marathon.

Walking on the beach is quite exhausting. Especially against Hvide Sande, the sand has a consistency that is reminiscent of deep snow, so you have to reckon with a time premium similar to that of a mountain marathon . Accordingly, the time limit for the marathon runners is seven hours.
