History and sights

During the Second World War , part of the Atlantic Wall was built on the Danish west coast from 1942 . While around 7,000 bunker systems were built in Denmark, 243 larger and 518 smaller concrete systems were concentrated at Nymindegab alone. Over 190,000 m³ of concrete was used here. Many of the systems were blown up after the war, others slipped from the dune crest onto the beach due to the ongoing coastal erosion or are already lying in shallow water.

The Nymindegab Museum is well worth a visit. It has a picture gallery with paintings by the “Nymindegab painters” Laurits Tuxen and Johannes Larsen . In addition, original excavation results (e.g. two graves from the Bronze Age) and many artifacts from the Stone Age to the more recent past can be viewed. Next to the museum is the Hvalhuset , an exhibition pavilion with the twelve-meter-long skeleton of a sperm whale stranded here . Display panels and text panels provide detailed information about whales in general and the showpiece in particular. An open-air exhibition presents the life of a carpenter's family around 1930. A special feature is a windmill that powered the carpenter's / wheelwright's machines in the workshop below. The house shows original furnishings from around 1930.

There is also the possibility to visit the sea rescue station in Nymindegab. Denmark's oldest lifeboat is kept here. It was exhibited in the National Museum in Copenhagen from 1966 to 1977 when it returned to its former location.

One of the oldest hotels in Jutland is in Nymindegab, the Nymindegab Kro . It was modernized in 2006.
