Cheng Po-yu gained his first international experience at the Asian Youth Games 2013 in Nanjing , where he finished fifth in the 100-meter run in 11.06 s and fourth over 200 meters in 22.17 s. The following year he retired from the Junior Asian Championships in Taipei with 10.96 s over 100 meters in the first round, but won the bronze medal in the Taiwanese 4 x 100 meter relay in 39.91 s. He also qualified for the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, where he won the B final with 10.83 s. In 2015 he took part in the summer Universiade in Gwangju for the first time with the relay , but did not reach the finish there in the run-up and also at the U20 World Championships 2016 in Bydgoszcz he did not reach the final with the relay with 40.33 seconds. In 2017 he again took part in the Student World Games in Taipei and won the bronze medal there in 39.06 seconds behind the teams from Japan and the United States. Two years later he reached the semi-finals at the Summer Universiade in Naples over 100 meters, in which he was eliminated with 10.71 s. He was also fourth in the season in 39.78 s.
