Taiō Kanai gained his first international experience at the Junior Asian Championships 2014 in Taipei , where he won the gold medal in 13.33 s. He qualified for the Junior World Championships in Eugene , where he reached the semi-finals. In 2017, he finished fourth in the Taipei Summer Universiade in 13.69s. The following year he took part in the Asian Games in Jakarta for the first time and finished there in 13.74 s in seventh place. Shortly afterwards he was sixth in the Athletics Continental Cup in Ostrava in 13.72 s. In 2019 he reached fifth place in 13.64 s at the Asian Championships in Doha . Shortly afterwards he finished second in the mixed hurdles relay at the World Relays in Yokohama in 55.59 s. He also qualified for the World Championships , which were also held in Doha, where he was eliminated with 13.74 s in the first round .
In 2018 Kanai became Japanese champion in the 110-meter hurdles. He graduated from Hōsei University .
