Peter Kálmán (born 1970 in Budapest ) is a Hungarian opera singer ( baritone ).

Life

Kálmán studied first with Anna Pauk in Budapest, then with Gabor Carelli at the Manhattan School of Music in New York , and finally with Mircea Breazu in Budapest. He completed master classes with Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge . In 1993 Kálmán won the first Hungarian Mozart Competition and was then engaged to the Hungarian State Opera , where he played the Papageno and the Figaro Count. This was followed by an engagement at the Opera Studio of the Zurich Opera , during which he a. a. performed in La finta semplice , Carmen , La fanciulla del West and in La serva padrona . In 1998 the singer became a member of the Zurich Opera ensemble, where he sang a. a. the Belcore in L'elisir d'amore , the Silvano in the masked ball and the Angelotti in Tosca , again the Papageno and the Count in Figaro, and finally for the first time Gianni Schicchi and Don Magnifico in La Cenerentola . In Zurich, Kálmán also worked for the first time with well-known conductors such as Nello Santi , Christoph von Dohnányi , Ádám Fischer , Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos , Valery Gergiev , Stefan Soltesz and Vladimir Fedoseyev .

After returning to the Hungarian State Opera, Kálmán played a. a. Figaro both in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro , as well as in Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia , further Beckmesser in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg , the Faninal in Rosenkavalier and the title role in Don Pasquale , and finally the Bartolo in Barbiere di Siviglia as well as Alberich . At the Hungarian Opera Festival in Miskolc he took on the roles of Malatesta in Don Pasquale and De Siriex in Fedora as well as the title role in Gianni Schicchi . At the Budapest Spring Festival in 2006 and 2007 he sang the Count in Figaro, at the Veszprém Festival 2012 again as Malatesta, this time alongside Erika Miklósa and Ruggero Raimondi .

In 2012 he sang Elmiro in Rossini's Otello at the Zurich Opera , in a Leiser / Caurier production in which he could also be seen and heard in 2014 at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris and at the Salzburg Whitsun Festival . Also in 2012 he made his debut in Handel's Giulio Cesare in Egitto and in Puccini's La Bohème at the Salzburg Festival , and as Nonancourt in Nino Rota's opera Il cappello di paglia di Firenze in Nantes and Angers . In Bergen he gave the Don Magnifico in La Cenerentola , in Tel Aviv the Papageno in the Magic Flute and in Glasgow the Leporello in Don Giovanni .

In 2013 Kálmán appeared at the Theater an der Wien - alongside Pretty Yende and Cecilia Bartoli - as governor in Rossini's Le comte Ory , in 2014 he sang Bartolo and Antonio in two concert performances of Nozze di Figaro with the Concentus Musicus Wien under Nikolaus Harnoncourt .

Kálmán's concert repertoire includes Mozart's C minor Mass , Beethoven's Ninth and Carl Orff's Carmina Burana .
