Ruggero Raimondi (born October 3, 1941 in Bologna , Emilia-Romagna ) is an Italian opera singer ( bass baritone ) and film actor.

Life

Ruggero Raimondi studied in Milan and Rome and made his debut in Spoleto in 1964 as Colline in La Bohème . From 1965 to 1968 he performed at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice . In 1968 he made his debut as Timur in Turandot at La Scala in Milan , in 1969 as Mozart's Don Giovanni in Glyndebourne and in 1970 as Silva in Ernani at the Metropolitan Opera . At the Royal Opera House in London he appeared for the first time in 1972 as Fiesco in Verdi's Simon Boccanegra and at the Paris Opéra Garnier in 1975 as Procida in Verdi's I Vespri Siciliani . He made his debut at the Salzburg Festival in 1980 as König in Aida . On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of La Scala, he sang Philip in Don Carlo under the baton of Claudio Abbado . In 1986 he directed a production of Mozart's Don Giovanni for the first time.

In 1992 he sang Scarpia in Tosca at the original locations in Rome in a live broadcast in 107 countries; this production won 3 Emmys and reached a billion television viewers worldwide.

Raimondi, who is considered to be the successor of Ezio Pinza and Cesare Siepis , has been internationally regarded as one of the greatest in his field for 30 years, especially as an interpreter of the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Giuseppe Verdi . His numerous appearances in opera adaptations (as Don Giovanni under the direction of Joseph Loseys , as Escamillo ( Carmen ) under Francesco Rosi , as Boris Godunow under Andrzej Żuławski , as Scarpia ( Tosca ) under Benoît Jacquot and others) made him known to a wider audience.
