Alois Koch was the son of the schoolmaster Josef Koch. He studied at the Polytechnic Institute from 1870 to 1875 . In the following years he was probably active as an architect (self-employed or with other construction offices) before he began as an engineer in the Ministry of the Interior in 1887 . In 1893 he became a senior engineer there. Koch worked in the Ministry in the Department of Building Construction in the planning and execution of schools and official buildings. He was also a representative of the ministry in various building commissions. In 1898 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Franz Joseph Order and became a building officer . In 1907 he was appointed kk senior building officer and in 1909 kk ministerial advisor in the Ministry of Public Works. In 1912 Koch retired and was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Leopold Order on his departure .

Since Alois Koch was a civil servant architect, it is usually difficult to estimate how far he had personal freedom of choice in the design of the buildings in the construction projects he carried out. Wherever this is certain, he is to be addressed as a representative of traditional historicism, which, however, was also open to modern trends. The establishment of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences is considered to be Koch's most important work .
