The city lies on the western bank of the Danube .

history

Földvár 1864

The oldest known mention of the place comes from the year 1199 as Monasterium de Felduar . The document shows that King Béla II founded a monastery here in 1131. Around 1530 the area was occupied by the Turks. They built fortifications. For this they used the monastery as a quarry and called the place Jur Hisszarit, which was described by Evliya Çelebi in 1663 . After the Turkish occupation, Serbs and Germans were settled in the depopulated area.

Because of its favorable location on a Danube crossing, Földvár developed into a market town. In 1703 King Leopold confirmed the market rights. During the Rákóczi uprising , the castle was conquered by the Kuruc in 1704 and 1705 and then held for a long time.

In 1713, Ferenc László Mednyánszky, the landlord of the former Földvár monastery, guaranteed freedom of settlement in a so-called contractus. These privileges attracted settlers and guilds emerged . In the middle of the 18th century there were six. In 1872 the guilds were dissolved, there were eleven. Földvár became the seat of a salt office and got a post office.

In 1830 the first steamship reached Földvár. For Danube shipping, the port became an important transshipment point for salt from Transylvania , wood from Upper Hungary , grain and other industrial goods. The straightening of the Danube and the associated closure of the port in Tolna made trade even livelier. In 1831 and 1855 there were cholera epidemics . In 1858 a fire ravaged the city. There were 715 dead to mourn. The poor house, the hospital, the salt house, the school building built in 1798 and the old church burned down. Another fire caused less damage in 1862.

With the First Municipal Law of 1871, Földváros was classified as a large municipality and the district seat moved to Paks . The name of the district of Dunaföldvár (dunaföldvári járás) was retained. In 1896 the first train ran into the newly built station in Dunaföldvárs. The railway line between Földvár and Paks was closed in 2009 and a cycle path was built on the dam in 2015.

The telephone network was set up in 1906.

The József-Beszédes bridge

A bridge over the Danube was built from 1928 to 1930. It was named after the hydraulic engineer József Beszédes who died in Dunaföldvár . Since 1940, rail traffic between Dunaföldvár and Solt has also been handled via this bridge. With the renovation in 2000/01, rail traffic was stopped again.
