Arates Monastery

The monastery Arates ( Armenian Արատեսի վանք Aratesi Wank ) is a former convent of the Armenian Apostolic Church in the village Arates in the province of Vayots Dzor Province in the south of Armenia . The oldest inscription in the monastery dates from 907, the youngest dates from 1713. In the 13th century the monastery was the summer residence of the historian and metropolitan Stepanos Orbelian . Today it is a ruin.

Development of the name

According to a legend, the name of the monastery is made up of the terms ari (= to come) and tes (= to see).

The three churches Surb Zion ( Church of Zion ), Surb Karapet (Church of St. John the Baptist ) and Surb Astvatsatsin (Church of Our Lady) are on an axis from north to south.

The oldest church on the site is the Zionskirche. Its origins go back to the 7th century. Opposite it is the Church of Our Lady at the other end of the monastery . The building is a cross-domed church . Their year of construction is unknown. On an inner wall there is an inscription with the year 1073, but it is unclear whether it relates to the year of construction.

Between the two stands the Church of St. John the Baptist with its square floor plan. Its year of construction is also unknown, although there is also an inscription that mentions the year 1251. At the church, a smaller Gawit grown, as a special feature of the intercostal possessed. In the center of the roof is the destroyed stalactite vault . The rector of the monastery, Hairapet, had the porch attached to the church in 1270 by the architects Siranes and Grigoris and under the patronage of the nobleman Smbat Orbelian (Smbat Orbelian, whose tomb is in the Noravank monastery ).

The monastery complex was originally surrounded by a wall, which was destroyed in the 17th century. Chatschkars and tombstones from the 10th-17th centuries can be found on the site of the former monastery Century.
