The San Francisco Marathon is a marathon that has been held in San Francisco in July or August since 1977 . Its popularity is mainly due to the many sights that are passed on the route.

The starting line is on the Embarcadero by the Ferry Building. First you always walk along the Bay of San Francisco in the direction of the Golden Gate . After crossing Fisherman's Wharf and Fort Mason, the Presidio leads to the Golden Gate Bridge . After crossing it, turn around at Vista Point and return to the other lane of the bridge. Head south, where a large loop is made through Golden Gate Park , then through Haight-Ashbury towards the bay, and finally past AT&T Park to the finish, which is on the Embarcadero two blocks south of the start.

Both the first and the second half of the marathon route are offered as separate half marathons that take place at the same time as the marathon. A 5 km run is also part of the program.

  3. Due to a misdirection, Lewy-Boulet ran a route that was shortened by approx. 800 m. Her time was corrected to 2:53:55 and the prize money was split between her and runner-up Carolyn Doles (3:06:36).
