The Golden Gate (to German golden gate is) a strait that the Pacific with the San Francisco Bay connects. It is about eight kilometers long and between 1.6 and three kilometers wide. It got its name in the time of the great gold rush around 1848 and is thus also a reference to the nickname of the state of California Golden State . At that time, thousands of prospectors and adventurers came by ship through the strait and anchored in the port of San Francisco . Since the gold rush promised prosperity and wealth, the term was quickly adopted by the public and made the term for access to happiness.

Until the gold rush, the Spaniards called the passage "Boca del Puerto de San Francisco" ("mouth of the port of San Francisco").

The flow has been washed away by the strong tidal range and the two rivers Sacramento and San Joaquin for thousands of years. The current through the Golden Gate changes direction with the tides. Their speed is up to 10 km / h at low tide or 8 km / h at high tide.

The famous Golden Gate Bridge has spanned the strait since 1937 . The Golden Gate Park of the same name is also known .
