Sujata Koirala (born February 9, 1954 in Biratnagar ) is a Nepalese politician .

biography

Sujata Koirala comes from the influential Nepalese political family Koirala . Both her father Girija Prasad Koirala and his brothers Matrika Prasad Koirala and Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala were Prime Ministers of Nepal. In addition, Man Mohan Adhikari , a cousin of the Koirala brothers, was Prime Minister of Nepal.

Like her father, she also joined the Nepalese Congress Party and was elected an executive member of the NCP's Central Committee. In this, she was also head of the department for international relations and thus, after the increasing democratization of the country after 1990, she assumed an important position and at the same time close confidante of her father Girija Koirala, who is still chairman of the NCP.

Her father also appointed her minister in his cabinet between 2006 and 2008. During this time, in January 2008, the Maoist Communist Party of Nepal accused her of campaigning for the monarchy and the disempowered King Gyanendra and demanded her dismissal as minister.

In the election to the Constituent Assembly of Nepal in 2008 , she was elected to represent the NCP as a member of this interim parliament.

On June 4, 2009 she was appointed Foreign Minister in his cabinet by Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal . At the same time, her father appointed her head of the group of NCP ministers in the coalition government.
