Julie Brown ( Julie Ann Brown ; born February 4, 1955 in Billings , Montana ) is a former American long-distance runner .

Originally a middle-distance runner , she became the first cross-country runner to receive a scholarship from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). In 1975 she won the World Cross Country Championships in Rabat , 1978 and 1981 the national title. She also excelled on the track . In 1975 she set a world record in the 10,000 meter run with 35: 00.4 minutes , and in 1974 and 1976 she set a US record in the 5000 meter run with 16: 38.0 minutes and 16: 14.0 minutes, respectively .

In 1975 she became national champion in the 1,500 meter run , in 1979 indoors over 2 miles and in 1980 outdoors over 3,000 meters .

In 1976 she ran her first marathon at the Western Hemisphere Marathon and was the fifth fastest woman of the year right away with 2:45:33 h. Two years later, with 2:36:24 h, run at the US Championship in Eugene , she set a world best for the year and a national record. After the boycott of the USA prevented participation in the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow , she finally relocated to the long route and came second in the New York City Marathon in 2:28:33 h in 1982. As the winner of the Avon Marathon in Los Angeles , she won the national title again with her personal best of 2:26:26 h, the fastest time in a US championship to date. Brown ranks fourth in the US all-time best list (as of December 2008).

As runner-up in the US championship the following year, she qualified for the premiere of the Olympic Women's Marathon at the Games in Los Angeles , but only came in 36th place due to a disease of Pfeiffer's glandular fever . After finishing eighth in the New York Marathon in 1985, she ended her athletic career and became a lawyer .
