Propionic anhydride is a chemical compound from the group of carboxylic acid anhydrides .

Extraction and presentation

Propionic anhydride, by dehydration of propionic acid with ketene obtained:

properties

Propionic anhydride has a pH of 2.5 and a viscosity of 1.144 mPa.s at 20 ° C. In water it decomposes to propionic acid.

use

Propionic anhydride is used as an intermediate in the production of other chemical compounds (e.g. propiophenone , fentanyl ).

safety instructions

The vapors of propionic anhydride can form an explosive mixture with air ( flash point 74 ° C, ignition temperature 315 ° C). Due to exothermic hydrolysis to form an acid (propionic acid), it is also very irritating to corrosive.
