Organic Synthesis (abbreviated as Org. Synth. And Synth Coll Vol Org.... ) Is a scientific journal from the United States , which since 1921 with an annual collection of detailed and checked procedures for the synthesis of organic compounds at chemist turns . The magazine has a good reputation because every manufacturing procedure is checked by a group of independent chemists on a kg scale.

history

Organic Syntheses began its history in April 1917, when, due to the entry of the USA into the First World War, chemical supplies from Europe were no longer possible. In response, the University of Illinois set up summer working groups in which students worked to optimize synthetic methods for specialty chemicals on the 100 g to 1 kg scale.

An example of much-needed chemicals during World War II was dyes used to sensitize photographic film. After 1950, the research department for organic chemistry at Eastman Kodak emerged from his working group.

publication

The synthetic methods of the summer working groups were published between 1919 and 1921 as brochures and from 1921 as a journal with the title Organic Syntheses . In the period that followed, regulations from industrial laboratories and other universities were also used.

The editions of Organic Syntheses appear as annual volumes (" Annual Volume ", currently 85 volumes) and are summarized at longer intervals in collective volumes (" Collective Volume ", currently 10 volumes). In contrast to the annual volumes, the anthologies contain any necessary editorial additions to the procedural descriptions.

Members of the American Chemical Society and the Organic Syntheses Section receive a personal copy of the current annual volume. In 1998 the Board of Directors decided to publish all previous and current issues of Organic Syntheses freely on the Internet.

Validation

One of the great strengths of the working instructions in Organic Syntheses is that they must have been experimentally checked on the same scale by an independent expert before they can be published. At the same time, this led to a small weakness of Organic Syntheses in that many regulations appear to be relatively special. However, there you can find synthesis instructions for many standard preparations in organic chemistry.
