Donald Gelling

Donald James Gelling , CBE (born July 5, 1938 in Santon Parish , Isle of Man ) is a British politician who was Chief Minister of the Isle of Man between 1996 and 2001 and again from 2004 to 2006 .

Life

Gelling, son of John Cyril Gelling and his wife Gladys Maddrell, completed his education at Santon Infants , Murray's Road Junior School and Douglas High School . He then completed vocational training in mechanical engineering between 1954 and 1959 and then did his military service in the Royal Air Force (RAF) from 1959 to 1961 , before working as a machine and car salesman from 1961 to 1969. Most recently he was managing director of a trading company for agricultural and industrial goods from 1969 to 1988.

At the beginning of the 1960s Gelling began his political career in local politics and was a member of the municipal council of Santon and several committees of the local council and of districts (Sheadings) from 1961 to 1986 . In 1986 he became a member of the House of Keys , the lower house of parliament ( Tynwald ) , and represented the constituency of Malew and Santon in this after his re-elections in 1991, 1996 and 2001 to 2002 . In the governments of Chief Minister Miles Walker he held from 1988 to 1989, first the post of Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry) and was then from 1989 to 1996 Treasury Minister (Minister for Treasury) . At the same time he acted from 1989 to 1996 as chairman of the commission for financial supervision and between 1990 and 2002 as chairman of the cabinet committee for economy.

On December 3, 1996 Gelling then replaced Miles Walker as Chief Minister of the Isle of Man and held this office until December 4, 2001, after which he was replaced by Richard Kenneth Corkill . He was then chairman of the insurance and pension administration from 2002 to 2007 and was a member of the Legislative Council , the upper house of Tynwald , between 2002 and his resignation in 2006 . For his services to the Isle of Man, he was named Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) on June 15, 2002 . In 2003 he became community leader of Santon (Captain of the Parish)

As the successor to the resigned Richard Kenneth Corkill, he took over on December 14, 2004 again the office of Chief Minister of the Isle of Man. He remained until December 14, 2006 and was then replaced by James Anthony Brown .
