Usedom marathon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Usedom Marathon is an international marathon and half marathon on the island of Usedom ( Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ), which takes place annually in September. It is organized by the German Athletics Association , Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania State Association and organized by the Usedom-Marathon eV association based in Wolgast . From 1979 to 2004 it was the only marathon in which the German-Polish border is crossed (then also the European marathon ).

The start of the marathon took place in 1979 in Świnoujście, Poland . In 1980 members of the GDR army were not allowed to start in Swinoujscie. They started at the memorial in Ahlbeck and ran towards the Polish border, where they placed themselves in the field coming from Swinoujscie. In 1981 it started in Ahlbeck. In 1982 the run was canceled. In 1984, 1986 and 1988 the race ran in the opposite direction, from the Wolgast Peenestadion to the Świnoujście stadium. The run was known as the friendship run. Once it was rated as a Baltic Sea Cities Run . The track record from the GDR era reached 2:25:11 hours in 1987. The first winner was Marian-Bernd Pries from Güstrow.

Starting from the promenade in Świnoujście , the route runs over the lakeside promenades of the Dreikaiserbäder (Heringsdorf, Ahlbeck, Bansin) to the Bansin campground. From there, the marathon in the Usedom Island Nature Park follows the European coastal cycle and hiking trail E9 to Zinnowitz . The route through Zinnowitz is about 1 km long on the B111 . From Zinnowitz the route leads on a new cycle path to Wolgast. After crossing the Peenebrücke it goes through the city Wolgast to their destination in Wolgast Peene Stadium.

A half marathon has also been held regularly since 1990. This also begins and ends in the Peene Stadium. It runs through the places Neeberg , Sauzin and Ziemitz.

The logo of the event shows a seagull in sports shoes walking forward.

During the GDR era between 100 and 200 runners reached the finish line, later there were 72 runners in 1991, 102 runners in 1992, 128 runners in 1993. The average number of participants in both marathons and half marathons is now around 300.
