European marathon
The European marathon is a marathon in the German-Polish city of Görlitz / Zgorzelec that has been held annually in June since 2004. It is organized by the Europamarathon Görlitz-Zgorzelec eV and besides the Usedom Marathon is the only marathon in which the German-Polish border is crossed. The program also includes a half marathon , a 10 km run, 5 km run, 2 km run, 400 m run for children (so-called Bambini run), a marathon and a half marathon for skaters and unicyclists as well as a marathon for wheelchair users and handbikers . For unicyclists, the marathon has been rated as the German Unicycle Marathon Championship since 2018 .
The start and finish of all routes is Elisabethstrasse . From there, the marathon first goes over the Neisse on a loop through the neighboring Polish town of Zgorzelec. After 10 km you return to Görlitz over the city bridge . The route now describes an arc that extends south and west of the city center to Königshufen . Via Rauschwalde and Schlauroth it now goes to the west of the Landeskrone in the area of the municipality of Markersdorf . The districts of Pfaffendorf and Jauernick-Buschbach are approached before returning to the starting point of the route via Kunnerwitz and Weinhübel . The route, measured according to the internationally applicable guidelines, is paved throughout and, at around 200 meters in altitude, has a rather undulating profile.
The route of the half marathon is identical to that of the marathon up to km 15. In Königshufen it turns east and then south on the Neisse towards the destination. On the 10-km route, you first walk a shortened loop through Zgorzelec and then go straight back to the starting point of the route.
