The Luxembourg Marathon (with its full name ING Night Marathon Luxembourg after the main sponsor ING Groep ), first held in 2006 as a European Marathon (until 2012), is the only marathon in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg . It is one of the few marathons that take place at night or in the evening. A half marathon is offered as an additional route . A relay team run over the marathon distance, a 5km run (5K Run for Success, teams of 3) and two mini marathons for children are available. Until 2010 the marathon took place in May, since 2011 it has also been held occasionally in June. All disciplines together had a maximum field of 10,000 runners, in 2018 there were already 16,000.
The start is on the Kirchberg plateau next to the Luxexpo event hall . First of all, the Europaviertel is circled before it goes over the "Rout Bréck" ( Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge ) to the upper town. There you first run a loop through the Limpertsberg district and then through the city park to Place Guillaume II in the city center. From there, the half-marathon runners go directly over the Rout Bréck back to their destination in the Luxexpo, while the marathon runners have a loop through Belair and one through Hollerich before crossing the Adolphe Bridge into the station district. After a loop has also been run through there, the route leads through the Petruss Valley , back to the station district and over the Adolphe Bridge you reach the city center, which is now illuminated at night, past the cathedral and the Grand Ducal Palace . Finally, it goes back over the Rout Bréck back to the Kirchberg plateau, which is traversed again to the Ostend before reaching the finish line in the main hall of the Luxexpo. The course is attractive, but also wavy and winding and therefore not necessarily suitable for fastest times.
Runners from 60 nations took part in the premiere. The largest group was made up of the locals with a good quarter of the participants, followed by Germans, French and Belgians.
