Nicholas Udall

Nicholas Udall (* 1505 in Hampshire , † December 23, 1556 in London ) was an English playwright , educator and canon in Windsor .

Life

Udall was born in Hampshire and studied at Oxford , where he entered Corpus Christi College in 1524 . He soon found access to Henry VIII's court and in 1534 became headmaster of Eton College . He was dismissed after seven years in office. Later he enjoyed the favor of Edward VI. and Maria I. Tudor ; In 1554 he took over the management of Westminster School . Udall wrote the first English Renaissance comedy "Ralph Roister Doister" (around 1552), which appeared only after his death. The piece followed the example of the ancient poets Terenz and Plautus and should be performed by Udall's students. Udall also translated some things and wrote the "Morality Respublica" (1553).
