Starting position

One of the two main favorites for the world championship title is Canadian Damian Warner, who presented himself in good shape early on in Götzis at the end of May, won the Pan American Games in August and leads the world rankings of the year. The second, Kevin Mayer, world champion from 2017 and world record holder from 2018, had not yet completed a full decathlon this year. However, he had significantly reduced participation in competitions since the 2018/2019 indoor season in favor of his preparation for the world championships and attracted attention with very good individual performances. Behind these two are several athletes who have almost the same preliminary results. Interesting from a German point of view is the development of the only twenty-one year old Niklas Kaul, who, as the U20 world record holder from 2017, was able to increase his best performance to 8572 points in his second season among the active players.
