Ensembles

Ensemble in the center of Zusmarshausen

Zusmarshausen cityscape.JPG

The ensemble comprises the north-south facing, slightly rising street of the market and castle square as the historical core area of the market place. Zusmarshausen probably emerged from a Carolingian settlement and developed under the rule of the Augsburg bishopric into a place with fair market conditions. The historical place of market traffic is the wide street between the junction of Ulmer and Augsburger Strasse. It is bordered on the east side by a closed row of bourgeois gabled and hipped roof houses, into which the small town hall is inserted, which is characterized by a stepped gable and a roof turret; the buildings are plastered and mostly come from the 18th and 19th centuries. Century. On the west side, the parish church built by the Augsburg architect Michael Kurz between 1939 and 1944 is the dominant building; it is elevated above the retaining walls of the former churchyard, has preserved the medieval tower of its predecessor and is surrounded by a baroque chapel, a gate tower and the stately former rectory below to the north. At the transition between the market square and the palace square, the broad, very stately baroque post office with its hipped roofs dominates the street scene; it documents the importance of the place as a post office on the road from Augsburg to Ulm since the 17th century, while manorial and official buildings determine the character of the Schlossplatz. The free-standing castle, at the southern end, was built in 1505 by the Augsburg bishop Heinrich IV. Von Lichtenau as a high esteem care office and, after secularization, served as a district judge's office; the other buildings, mostly free-standing and surrounded by gardens, in contrast to the town houses on the market square, were mostly built in the 19th century. Remarks

  1. This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
