history
Until the church is planted
The region around Zusmarshausen has been settled since the Paleolithic , as the hand ax found by Wörleschwang in 2008 proves. The origin of the place is believed to be in the 7th or 8th century. Zusmarshausen was first mentioned in a document by King Arnulf in 892. During the time of the tribal duchies , Zusmarshausen was in the Duchy of Swabia . In 1295 the community was raised to the market .
With the battle of Zusmarshausen on May 17, 1648, the last major battle of the Thirty Years' War took place. Today the logo of the local brewery Schwarzbräu , a flag thrower from the time of the Thirty Years War, as well as the beer brand name “Schwedenpils” reminds of the importance of the events of that time for the place. In 1684 the place received a post office on the Paris - Vienna road.
With the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803, Zusmarshausen came from the bishopric Augsburg and the today's districts of Gabelbachergreut and Steinekirch from the cathedral monastery Augsburg to Bavaria. In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria , today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .
District affiliation
From 1862 to 1929, Zusmarshausen belonged to the district office of Zusmarshausen and from 1929 to the district office of Augsburg , which has been known as the Augsburg district since 1939 .
etymology
The name of the settlement is attested in 892 as Zusemarohuson , 1239 as Zusemeshusen , 1246 as Zvsmarshvsen , 1345 as Zusmerhausen , 1654 as Zusmershausen and since 1792 as Zusmarshausen . The part of the name hausen is the Old High German plural form of the word hūs and means "building" or "house". The qualifier is a derivation of the river name Zusam , which means “the people at the Zusam”.
Incorporations
On October 1, 1976, the previously independent communities of Steinekirch, Vallried and Wörleschwang were incorporated. Gabelbach, Gabelbachergreut, Horgau and Wollbach and parts of the area of the dissolved community of Streitheim were added on May 1, 1978.
Outsourcing
After years of resistance from the population, the municipality of Horgau became an independent municipality again through the judgment of the Bavarian Constitutional Court on October 27, 1983. The newly elected local council began its work on May 1, 1984.
Population development
Between 1988 and 2018 the municipality grew from 4,856 to 6,378 by 1,522 inhabitants or by 31.3%.

- CSU : 8 seats (40.9%)
- Free electoral association : 7 seats (35.3%)

Culture and sights
The ruins of the high medieval Wolfsberg Castle from the 10th century can be found above the Steinekirch district . There is an enigmatic rampart on the Antoniberg . Its origin is the subject of much archaeological speculation.
Cultural events are organized in Zusmarshausen under the common umbrella of Zus Kultur .
A public observatory and a planetarium are located in the Streitheim district . The observatory opened on the day of the total solar eclipse, August 11, 1999. An “astronomical pergola” offers insights into current celestial events and is located on the circular hiking trail at the observatory.
