The current owner, Leopold Schwarz, is the fifth generation to manage the brewery. The sales area extends mainly 40 km around the Zusmarshausen location.

history

In 1648 imperial troops and the Swedish army fought near Zusmarshausen in the battle of the Red Mountain . A short time later, the Thirty Years War ended with the Peace of Westphalia . A legend tells that after the battle the emaciated Swedes stormed the “Zum Grünen Baum” brewery, which is now called “Schwarzbräu”, and drained all the barrels. The Schweden- Pils owes its name to this event . The label of the Schwarzbräu beer specialties today shows a flag thrower from the time of the Thirty Years War and became the trademark of Schwarzbräu.

After World War II , the brewery was occupied by the Americans and brewed beer for the American troops . However, the valuable malt was hidden in the storage cellar, deep under the brewery, in order to later brew it as a dark bock beer. Today the Aged Bock is stored here. a. was awarded the International Craft Beer Award 2016 in platinum.

Schwarzbräu is one of only six breweries left in Bavaria that owns its own malt house . Here, malt is made entirely from regional barley for personal use.

Schwarzbräu is a member of the Die Freie Brauer initiative founded in 2006 , an association of independent private breweries in Europe.

Malting

Schwarzbräu is one of only three breweries south of the Danube to operate its own malt house . This consists of Saladin germination boxes and is therefore a classic box malting. 100% of the barley malt used is produced in the malt house.
