David Mott
David Mott (born January 7, 1945 in Downers Grove , Illinois ) is a native of the United States , living in Canada musician ( baritone saxophone , flute ) and composer in the field of jazz and contemporary music as well as a university professor.
Live and act
Mott first learned the clarinet and developed an interest in Dixieland jazz as a teenager . From 1962 to 1964 he studied composition and fine arts at Hope College . He then earned a Bachelor of Music from Berklee College of Music and a Masters from Yale School of Music, where he became interested in twelve-tone music. From 1974 to 1978 he taught composition at Yale and since 1978 at York University . He was also Artist in Residence at the Atlantic Jazz Festival, the Eastman School of Music , Hope College, the Open Waters Festival, the University of Illinois , the University of Massachusetts , the University of Southern California and Yale University.
He has performed solo concerts in Canada, the United States and Europe and has worked with musicians such as Ray Anderson , Jane Ira Bloom , Robert Dick , Mark Dresser , Jerry Granelli , Stevie Wonder , François Houle , David Moss , Gil Evans , Gerry Hemingway , Wadada Leo Smith , Anthony Davis , Victor Bateman , Pat LaBarbera , Marilyn Lerner and Michael Vladkovich . Mott is a founding member of the Sound Pressure ensemble ; he works with the saxophone quartet 40 Fingers and the Chelsea Bridge jazz ensemble . He currently also plays with accordionist Joseph Petric in the Duo Erosonic . He also recorded James Tenneys Saxony (1984).
His compositional work includes 125 pieces; David Mott founded the York Jazz Orchestra at York University .
Awards
In 1994 he was nominated (together with the pianist David Lopato) for the album The Standard Line for the Juno Award . In 1995, The Jazz Report Magazine named him Best Jazz Baritone Saxophonist . In 1996 he won the Juno Award as director of the Neufeld Occhipinti Jazz Orchestra (NOJO).
