The Dover Corporation is a US-based industrial goods companies. Dover was formed in 1955 by merging four originally independent mechanical engineering companies. 1955 also marks the date of the company's IPO on the NYSE . This origin led to the various divisions being run as independent sub-companies. This decentralized management has been maintained to this day. Dover is also known for a strong takeover-driven growth strategy.

The three main divisions are "Fluids" ( fittings , filtration systems, pumps, liquid handling ), "Refrigeration and Food Equipment" (cooling systems, heat exchangers, equipment for can production) and "Engineered Systems" (mechanical and electronic components, digital printing machines, etc.). The passenger elevator business was sold to Thyssen in 1999 .
